Following the success of the original Gemsbok Wilderness Trail, a new route has been opened from Malatso Pan, in the Mabuasehube area, to Nossob.

Those who wish to experience the solitude of the wilderness will find few signs of human intervention, but must observe the basic rules.

Wilderness trail users are trusted to use good bush practices and to leave the area unspoilt for those who follow.

4x4 vehicles are essential

The trail is lightly defined and rough, sometimes passing through areas of tall grass and sometimes over ridges and dunes of soft sands.

The route links together various pans, some plain and some spectacular.

The normal Kalahari wildlife may be seen along the trail, and lions may explore camps at night.

The trail MUST be booked, and only one group, of not less than two and not more than five 4X4 vehicles, is allowed to start the trail on any given day, to ensure exclusivity.

It is important to bear the following in mind:

  • Advance booking is obligatory
  • All relevant fees for the full period of your stay within the park are payable before you start the trail
  • Check-in at Mabuasehube before starting off: this is essential for safety tracking. Collect a trail baton to carry with you, it signifies that your use of the trail has been authorised
  • The time allocated for the trail is two days and one nights; you may not take a shorter or longer time
  • The trail is to be travelled westwards only, from Malatso Pan to a point near the South African Nossob Camp
  • It is recommended that you spend the night before and the night after the trail at different campsites, the trail elsewhere in the park, for which separate bookings should be made
  • Remember that you are totally responsible for your own safety
  • You must be completely self-sufficient for the whole trip, carrying your own water (minimum 10 litres per person per day), food, fuel, vehicles fluids, tools, firewood, spade, two spare tyres or tyre repair kit and other essential and recommended items
  • A 4X4 is essential (maximum 3.500 unladen weight; minimum of two and maximum of five vehicles in any one party; trailers are not permitted)
  • Campsites are designated near to Mosomane Pan. No other areas may be used. Note that sleeping outside without a tent is extremely dangerous: keep tent flaps zipped up
  • The group leader is responsible for the actions and conduct of the entire group, and must observe a few basic bush rules to ensure that the trail remains unspoilt for those who follow:
RULE 1: Stick to the track (see map supplied by park). No off-track driving is permitted

RULE 2: Take special care not to start a grass fire

RULE 3: Campfires should be lit on the sites of previous fires; fire slabs and ash pits are
                   provided

RULE 4: Dig holes at least 40 cm deep for toilet purposes, and burn all toilet paper

RULE 5: Leave no litter whatsoever, not even cigarette ends. Any litter left by previous
users should be collected, and any other obvious breach of the rules by previous
users should be reported. The culprits will be traced and appropriate action taken

RULE 6: Cause no harm or harassment to wildlife
